Man of Steel - Myth and Critique of Joseph Stalin

This project critically re-examines the history of Stalin and Stalinism. Since the Cold War, selective renderings of Soviet history have been strategically deployed to delegitimise socialist movements across the globe, while conveniently obscuring the brutal record of capitalist imperialism. As a concept, Stalinism has been central to this denigration of "actually existing socialism," routinely portrayed as the inevitable endpoint for any serious attempt to build a socialist alternative.

Yet many Western socialists have adopted this capitalist historiography wholesale, abandoning materialist analysis in the process. To reduce the Soviet Union's complex failures to the sole agency of Stalin is not only intellectually lazy but politically dangerous; if the Left refuses to learn from its historical mistakes, it remains doomed to repeat them.

Before Gorbachev opened the Soviet archives in the early 1990s, historical accounts of the Stalin era rested on remarkably flimsy empirical foundations, relying heavily on Trotsky’s polemics or other anecdotal sources. Despite their glaring biases, these interpretations became canonical in the West, particularly after Khrushchev's 1956 "secret speech", forming the bedrock of anti-Soviet Cold War propaganda.

Accepting this ideologically distorted narrative as prima facie true, without challenging its underlying premises, places socialists at a persistent rhetorical disadvantage. Deflecting every tragedy with convenient excuses: "it was all Stalin's fault,"; "it wasn't truly socialism,"; or "our version would be different" - rarely convinces non-partisan observers. To win hearts and minds, the Left must engage honestly with its own history and take meaningful accountability for it.

This podcast offers a modest overview of the burgeoning post-Soviet historiography on Stalin's USSR. While most of this newer scholarship comes from liberal or conservative academics rather than Marxists, it benefits from the waning of Cold War polemics, permitting greater academic integrity and a more judicious use of the newly abundant primary sources.

Where earlier biographies indulged in unsubstantiated psychologising, contemporary revisions increasingly frame Marxist ideology itself as the root cause of socialist failures. Far from being a relic of the past, critical engagement with these latest historical revisions remains urgent—and will prove consequential to the ongoing struggle for a credible socialist future.
