Chiefs Head Coach, Clayton McMillan - How We Recreated Our Identity & Chiefs Mana

Between Two Beers Podcast · 2025-02-09

Clayton McMillan is head coach of the Chiefs and widely respected as one of New Zealand’s very best rugby coaches.

In this episode we talk about Clayton’s unconventional upbringing, why he became a police officer, and why he left the force, his rugby career, his coaching career – and his path to the Chiefs job.

The second half of this one is packed full of world class coaching and leadership wisdom. We talk about what was happening behind the scenes at the Chiefs when he took over in 2021, his relationship with Warren Gatland, how Clayton built culture, and transformed the team in 12 months. We also discuss his All Blacks coaching aspirations, balance and family and the future of rugby.

This was a really cool and special chat. Clayton doesn’t do interviews like this; he’s a very private guy – and we felt incredibly privileged to share so much of his time and space.

Good questions. Great guests. Few beers... Steve and Seamus like asking good questions. And they love good answers. After over 20 years of friendship, they bought a microphone and started a podcast, allowing them to sit with, and learn from, the most interesting people they can access.

From Kiwi legend Marc Ellis, to media personalities Jeremy Wells and Paddy Gower, Rugby coach extraordinaire Wayne Smith, sexologist Morgan Penn, and Olympian Dame Lisa Carrington... Between Two Beers has produced countless hours of incredible stories, career highs, lows and moments of raw vulnerability. And it’s only the beginning.
